Guides · MusicBrainz Picard

MusicBrainz Picard Guide: Auto-Tag Music and Get Album Art

MusicBrainz Picard is a free, open-source music tagger for Windows, Mac, and Linux that identifies your audio files — even badly named ones — and writes correct artist, album, and track metadata plus cover art from the MusicBrainz database automatically. If your library is full of “Track 01” and misspelled albums, this is the fastest honest fix.

What Is MusicBrainz Picard?

Picard is the official tagger of the MusicBrainz project, the community-maintained open music database (think “Wikipedia for music metadata”). It’s free, open source, and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Its standout trick is acoustic fingerprinting: Picard can listen to the actual audio of a file and identify the song even when the filename and existing tags are completely wrong. Few taggers can do that.

How It Works: The 5-Step Workflow

Drag your files in. Open Picard and drag an album folder (or a pile of loose files) into the left pane.

Cluster. Click Cluster so Picard groups files it believes belong to the same album.

Lookup or Scan. Click Lookup (matches by existing metadata) or Scan (matches by audio fingerprint — use this when tags are missing or wrong).

Review the match. Picard shows the proposed MusicBrainz release in the right pane with a color-coded confidence indicator. Green is a strong match; check yellow/red ones before saving.

Save. Click Save and Picard writes corrected tags and downloads the cover art from the Cover Art Archive into your files (embedded, or as a folder image — your choice).

Getting Cover Art: The Setting to Check

Cover art handling lives in Picard’s options, roughly at Options → Cover Art (exact menu labels vary slightly between versions). There you can choose:

Where the art goes — embed it inside each file’s tags, or save it as a separate image (like
cover.jpg
) in the album folder. Embedding is the safer choice if you sync music to phones or car stereos (see our embedded vs folder.jpg explanation).

Which sources to use — the Cover Art Archive is the default; you can enable additional providers in the same section.

Image size limits — you can cap the maximum size so files don’t balloon.

Note: Picard fetches the community’s chosen cover for each release. It’s usually correct, but for rare pressings or the highest-resolution scan you may want to pick the image yourself — that’s where Album Art Downloader complements it (more below).

Who Should Use Picard?

Messy libraries: hundreds of files with wrong or missing tags, fixed in bulk per album.

Ripped CDs: your ripper got the tracklist wrong — Scan by audio fingerprint and fix it.

Store-bought files with bad tags: yes, even files bought from iTunes/Amazon can carry sloppy metadata; Picard cleans them up.

Anyone who wants cover art automatically: one Save writes tags and artwork together.

If you’d rather hand-pick each cover at maximum resolution instead of taking the automatic match, Album Art Downloader is the manual counterpart: search 20+ sources, preview, and save exactly the image you want. Many collectors use both — Picard for the bulk tagging, Album Art Downloader for the perfect cover.

Picard vs Mp3tag: The Short Version

Picard is the automatic tool (identify → match → save). Mp3tag is the manual precision tool (edit exactly what you want, batch-rename, embed art by hand). Full breakdown: Mp3tag vs MusicBrainz Picard.

Want the cover you choose?

Picard automates. Album Art Downloader lets you hand-pick the highest-resolution cover from 20+ sources.

How to Add Album Art to M4A Files (iTunes / Apple Music)

M4A is Apple’s container of choice — used by Apple Music, iTunes purchases, and AAC rips. It stores cover art in a covr atom, a dedicated metadata box inside the file. Embedding art into M4A is straightforward, and like other formats it never touches the audio itself.

Method 1: Apple Music / Music App (Easiest on Mac)

If you use Apple’s own ecosystem, you don’t need extra software:

Open the Music app (or iTunes on older systems) and find the album.

Right-click the album and choose Get Info, then open the Artwork tab.

Click Add Artwork, pick your image file, and confirm.

The art is written into the file’s covr atom — sync or export and it travels with the file.

Mac user? Our Mac guide covers the full picture of what works natively on macOS.

Method 2: Mp3tag (Windows, Batch-Friendly)

Mp3tag supports M4A just like MP3 and FLAC: load your files, select them all, drag a cover into the artwork panel (or right-click → Add cover), and press Ctrl+S. Ideal for fixing a whole library in one sitting. See the general concepts in our MP3 embedding guide — the workflow is the same.

Method 3: ffmpeg (Cross-Platform)

ffmpeg writes the covr atom for M4A with the same attached-picture pattern used for other formats:

ffmpeg -i song.m4a -i cover.jpg -map 0 -map 1 -c copy -disposition:v attached_pic out.m4a

Honest caveat: a very small number of old players don’t recognize covr atoms written by ffmpeg. If a player refuses to show art that ffmpeg embedded, re-save the file once in Mp3tag — that fixes it in nearly all cases.

Where to Find Covers for Your M4A Library

iTunes/Apple Music purchases usually come with art, but rips and conversions often don’t. Grab covers with our Album Art Downloader (batch search across 20+ script sources) or pick a source from our free cover sources guide.

How to Add Album Art to FLAC Files (Embed Without Losing Quality)

FLAC is lossless — but many FLAC files ship with no cover art at all. The good news: embedding artwork into FLAC is easy, and it does not touch the audio. FLAC stores the cover in a PICTURE metadata block (part of the Vorbis comment system), which sits alongside the audio data. Editing it changes metadata only — your lossless audio stays bit-identical.

Before You Start: Size Matters for FLAC Libraries

Unlike MP3, FLAC libraries are often large and precious. One practical warning: a 500 KB cover embedded into 15 tracks of an album adds ~7.5 MB. That is fine on modern storage, but for big collections we recommend embedding a ≤1000px JPG for display and keeping the original high-resolution file archived separately. You can find high-resolution covers on our cover sources page.

Method 1: Mp3tag (Recommended, Batch-Friendly)

Yes, Mp3tag handles FLAC despite the name. This is the fastest way to add art to a whole album at once:

Open Mp3tag and drag your FLAC album folder into the window.

Select all tracks (Ctrl+A).

Drag a cover image into the artwork panel (bottom left), or right-click it and choose Add cover.

Press Ctrl+S to save. The same cover is written into every selected file’s PICTURE block.

Method 2: MusicBrainz Picard (Automatic Matching)

If your tags are a mess, let Picard do the work: it fingerprints your files, matches them against MusicBrainz, and pulls matching covers from the Cover Art Archive automatically. Great for fixing dozens of albums in one pass. Learn where Picard gets its art on our cover sources guide.

Method 3: Command Line with metaflac (Linux)

On Linux, the
metaflac
tool that ships with the FLAC package does it in one command — no GUI needed:

metaflac --import-picture-from="cover.jpg" song.flac

It imports the image directly into the PICTURE block. Verify with
metaflac --list --block-type=PICTURE song.flac
.

Method 4: ffmpeg (Cross-Platform, No Re-Encoding)

ffmpeg can attach a cover to FLAC without re-encoding the audio (
-c copy
):

ffmpeg -i song.flac -i cover.jpg -map 0 -map 1 -c copy -disposition:v attached_pic out.flac

The
attached_pic
disposition marks the image as cover art so players display it.

FLAC vs MP3: What’s Different?

Very good in modern players

Already comfortable with MP3? The workflow is nearly identical — see our MP3 guide for the general embedded-vs-folder.jpg concepts.

How to Add Lyrics to MP3 (Embed Them in Your Music Files)

Cover art isn’t the only thing you can embed in a music file. Lyrics can live inside the MP3 too — in the ID3v2 tag, right next to the title, artist, and cover image. It’s the same idea as embedding album art: once it’s in the file, it travels with the music to your phone, your car, and every player that supports it.

Two flavors exist: unsynced lyrics (plain text, stored in the
USLT
frame — what most players show) and synced lyrics (line-by-line timestamps in the
SYLT
frame — karaoke-style, supported by fewer players and harder to create). For most people, unsynced lyrics are the practical choice.

Method 1: Embed Lyrics with Mp3tag (Recommended)

Plain-text lyrics, in under a minute

Open your files in Mp3tag and select the tracks.

Press Alt+T (Extended Tags).

Click the “+” (Add field) button.

Set the field name to
UNSYNCEDLYRICS
.

In the value box, type the language code, two pipe characters, then the lyrics — for example:
eng||Your lyrics here...

Click OK, then Ctrl+S to save. The lyrics are now embedded in the files.

Tip: select a whole album’s tracks and add the same lyrics field in one go, or do it per song for singles.

Method 2: MusicBrainz Picard + Lyrics Plugins

Semi-automatic, good for batches

MusicBrainz Picard supports community lyrics plugins that can fetch and embed lyrics while it tags your files. Plugin availability changes over time, so check Picard’s built-in plugin list (Options → Plugins) for what’s currently offered rather than trusting an old tutorial. Always verify the fetched lyrics match the right song before saving — automated matching makes mistakes, especially with live versions and remixes.

Where to Get Lyrics (Stay Legitimate)

Lyrics are copyrighted text. Use lyrics from sources you have the right to use: lyrics officially provided by the artist or label, public-domain or Creative Commons texts, or lyrics you transcribe yourself. We don’t link to pirate lyrics databases, and neither should the tutorials you follow.

The Full Package: Cover + Lyrics in One Pass

Do it once, do it right: open an album in Mp3tag, add the cover art (embedding guide) and the
UNSYNCEDLYRICS
field, then save. One pass gives you files that show artwork and lyrics on your phone, in the car, and anywhere else — no re-doing it later.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details>

What’s the difference between synced and unsynced lyrics?

Unsynced lyrics (USLT) are plain text shown as a block — supported by most players. Synced lyrics (SYLT) carry per-line timestamps for karaoke-style display, but fewer players support them and they’re much harder to create accurately.

</details>
<details>

Does embedding lyrics change the audio quality?

No. Like cover art, lyrics live in the metadata block. The audio stream is untouched — no re-encoding, no quality loss.

</details>
<details>

Will my phone show embedded lyrics?

Many Android music players and some car stereos display USLT lyrics; Apple Music shows its own licensed lyrics instead of embedded ones. Support varies, but embedding is harmless when unsupported — the file just plays normally.

</details>
<details>

Can I embed lyrics and cover art at the same time?

Yes — that’s the recommended workflow. In Mp3tag, add both the cover image and the UNSYNCEDLYRICS field before hitting save, and both travel with the file.

</details>

Home / Guides / Add Album Art to MP3

How to Add Album Art to MP3 (Embed It So It Shows Everywhere)

Downloaded a great cover but it still won’t show on your phone, car stereo, or USB stick? That’s because finding the artwork and embedding it are two different jobs. This guide shows you how to permanently write the cover into your MP3 files so it follows them everywhere.

First: Embedded Art vs. folder.jpg — Know the Difference

There are two ways a player can get your cover. Understanding this saves you hours of frustration:

Method

How it works

Pros

Cons

Embedded (recommended)

The image is written inside the MP3 file, in its ID3v2 tag

Travels with the file — shows on phones, car stereos, USB sticks, anything

Slightly larger file size (usually 100–500 KB extra)

External file (
folder.jpg
/
cover.jpg
)

The image sits next to the music files in the same folder

Quick; one image covers a whole album folder

Only works in players that look for it — copy the MP3s elsewhere and the cover is gone

Bottom line: If you want the cover to show on your phone, in your car, or on a USB stick, embed it. A
folder.jpg
alone is not enough. The methods below all embed the artwork permanently.

Method 1: Mp3tag (Recommended — Free, Batch-Friendly)

Mp3tag is the most reliable free tag editor for this job, and it handles whole albums at once.

1Load your files

Open Mp3tag and drag in the MP3 files (or the whole album folder).

2Select the tracks

Select all the tracks that should share the same cover (Ctrl+A for the whole album).

3Add the cover

Right-click the cover panel at the bottom left and choose Add cover, then pick your image file.

4Save

Press Ctrl+S. Mp3tag writes the image into each file’s ID3v2 tag. Done — the cover now travels with the files.

Batch tip: Select an entire album’s tracks before adding the cover and you embed it into all of them in one save. For a full workflow from finding covers to embedding them, see our Mp3tag integration guide.

Method 2: Windows Media Player

If you still use Windows Media Player, you can paste artwork onto an album:

In the library, right-click the album and choose Paste album art (after copying an image to your clipboard).

Media Player stores the image and usually embeds it into the files on the next library update.

Heads-up: Media Player sometimes stores the art only in its own library database instead of embedding it into the files. If the cover still doesn’t show on other devices afterward, use Mp3tag (Method 1) to embed it properly.

Method 3: iTunes / Apple Music App

Select the tracks, right-click and choose Get Info (or Song Info).

Go to the Artwork tab and click Add Artwork, then pick your image.

Click OK. iTunes writes the artwork into the files’ tags.

If you sync music to an iPhone, the embedded artwork carries over with the sync — no extra steps needed.

Method 4: ffmpeg (Command Line, One Command)

For scripting or Linux/macOS users, ffmpeg embeds a cover without re-encoding the audio (quality untouched):

ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -i cover.jpg -map 0 -map 1 -c copy -id3v2_version 3 -metadata:s:v title="Album cover" -metadata:s:v comment="Cover (front)" out.mp3

What this does: takes
input.mp3
and
cover.jpg
, copies the audio stream untouched (
-c copy
), and attaches the image as the front-cover stream in the ID3v2.3 tag of
out.mp3
.

Note: Use a square JPG for maximum compatibility — some older players crop or ignore non-square artwork.

Where to Get the Cover Images

You need a good source image before any of the methods above:

Batch-finding for whole libraries: Album Art Downloader scans your music folders and pulls covers from 20+ community script sources.

One-off covers: our free online album art downloader grabs high-resolution artwork from the public iTunes Search API — no install needed, works on Mac and Linux too.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details class="cb-faq">

Does embedding album art change the audio quality?

No. Embedding only writes data into the file’s metadata tag — the audio stream is copied untouched, not re-encoded. The only change is file size (typically 100–500 KB larger per track, depending on the image).

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

Embedded vs. folder.jpg — which should I use?

Use embedded art if you want covers on phones, car stereos, and USB sticks, since the image travels inside the file. Use folder.jpg as a convenient extra for desktop players that recognize it. Many collectors do both.

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

Why does the cover show in one player but not another?

Usually one of three reasons: the art was never embedded (only a folder.jpg exists), the image isn’t square (some players crop or reject it), or the player caches old tags — try removing and re-adding the files to that player’s library. Car stereos are the pickiest of all: see our car stereo troubleshooting guide.

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

What image size is best for embedding?

1000–1400px square JPG is the sweet spot: sharp on modern screens without bloating every file. See our album art size guide for the full breakdown by device.

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

Can I remove embedded artwork later?

Yes. In Mp3tag, select the files, right-click the cover panel and choose Remove cover, then save. The audio is untouched.

Album Art Downloader Command Line Parameters (Full Reference)

Every search you run in the Album Art Downloader GUI can also be launched from the command line — handy for scripts, batch jobs, and integrations with tag editors and music players. This is the full parameter reference for XUI v1.05.

Two Programs, One Parameter Set

AlbumArt.exe — the graphical program. It accepts command line parameters too: pass a search and the GUI opens with the results ready.

aad.exe — the dedicated command line version, for fully scripted, windowless use.

Parameters that only make sense for aad.exe are silently ignored by AlbumArt.exe, so a shared command line won’t error out in the GUI. Note the single-instance behavior: if the program is already running, your parameters are handed to the running instance instead of opening a second copy (use
/new
or
/separateInstance
to change that).

Mp3tag: our Mp3tag integration guide shows how to add Album Art Downloader as a Mp3tag Tool, passing the selected files’ artist, album, and folder automatically.

foobar2000: our foobar2000 integration guide covers the run-service setup that feeds the playing track’s metadata to the search.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details class="cb-faq">

What’s the difference between AlbumArt.exe and aad.exe?

AlbumArt.exe is the graphical program — it also accepts command line parameters and opens the GUI with the results. aad.exe is the pure command line version with no window, meant for scripts and batch jobs. Parameters that only apply to aad.exe (like /fetchAll and /orientation) are silently ignored by AlbumArt.exe.

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

Do parameter values need quotes?

Yes, whenever a value contains spaces — for example /ar “Miles Davis”. Unquoted multi-word values won’t be parsed as you expect.

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

Why did my search open inside the already-running window?

That’s the single-instance behavior: a running copy receives the new parameters instead of launching a second copy. Add /new to force a fresh search window, or /separateInstance for a fully separate process.

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

Can I filter for only large front covers from the command line?

Yes — combine /minSize 1000 with /coverType front. You can also restrict the sources searched with /sources in the same command.

Home / Guides / Scripts Guide

Album Art Downloader Scripts: Install, Update & Fix (Guide)

Scripts are the engine room of Album Art Downloader. Every website the program can search — Amazon, Discogs, MusicBrainz, and 20+ other community sources — is powered by a small script file. Understand how scripts work and you’ll understand why a source sometimes stops returning results, and exactly what to do about it.

What Scripts Are

A script is a small plugin file (with a .boo extension, written in the Boo scripting language) that teaches Album Art Downloader how to search one particular website: how to send the query, how to read the results page, and where the full-size image lives. The sources you tick in the search window — each checkbox — is one script.

The program ships with 20+ community scripts covering general stores, specialist music databases, and genre-specific sites. Because each source is just a script file, new sources can be added and broken ones repaired without touching the program itself.

Where Scripts Live

Scripts live in the Scripts folder inside the program’s installation directory — typically:

C:\Program Files\AlbumArtDownloader\Scripts\

The installer organizes them into subfolders by general category. If you ever need to back up your setup or move it to another PC, this folder is the one to copy.

Getting New and Updated Scripts

You don’t have to hunt for scripts manually. Album Art Downloader can check for script updates itself:

Open the program’s settings and look for the script update options.

Turn on automatic checking for script updates — the program will then fetch fixed and improved scripts on its own.

There’s also a “Get more scripts” function that lets you browse and install any available scripts you don’t have yet.

Good to know: script updates and program updates are checked separately. The program itself is at its final version (XUI v1.05), but scripts are living files — they get fixed whenever a website changes its layout.

When a Source Stops Working

This is the single most common “problem” with Album Art Downloader, and it’s almost never a bug in your installation. Websites redesign their pages constantly; when a site changes its HTML, the script written for the old layout returns zero results. It happens to every source sooner or later — for example, the Qobuz script has broken and been repaired several times over the years as the site kept changing.

What to do, in order:

Check for script updates — a fixed script is often already available.

Turn on automatic script updates if you haven’t, so fixes arrive by themselves next time.

Search with other sources meanwhile — with 20+ scripts enabled, one broken source rarely blocks you.

Check the SourceForge discussion boards for that script — if a source broke recently, someone has usually already reported it and a fix is on the way.

Don’t reinstall the program to fix a dead source. Reinstalling changes nothing about the script — you’ll end up with the same script file and the same empty results. Update the script instead.

Can You Write Your Own Script?

Yes. Scripts are plain text .boo files, and the program uses a strongly-typed, interface-based script model — you can even write compiled scripts in any .NET language if you prefer. The existing scripts in your Scripts folder are the best documentation: open one, copy its structure, and adapt it to the site you want to add. The community has historically shared new scripts through the SourceForge project pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details class="cb-faq">

What are scripts in Album Art Downloader?

Scripts are small .boo plugin files — one per website — that tell the program how to search that site for cover art and where to find the full-size image. The list of sources you see in the search window is simply the list of installed scripts.

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

Where is the Scripts folder?

In the Scripts subfolder of the installation directory, usually C:\Program Files\AlbumArtDownloader\Scripts\. Copy this folder to back up or migrate your sources to another PC.

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

One source returns no results. Is the program broken?

Almost certainly not. Websites redesign their pages regularly, which breaks the script written for the old layout. Check for script updates (or enable automatic updates) — a fixed script is usually already available — and search with your other sources in the meantime.

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

How do I get new or updated scripts?

Use the “Get more scripts” function in the program to browse and install scripts you don’t have, and turn on automatic script update checking so repaired scripts download themselves when websites change.

How to Scan Your Music Library for Missing Album Art (File Browser Guide)

The File Browser is the fastest way to audit a whole music collection in Album Art Downloader. Point it at a folder, and it reads your files, lists every album it finds, and flags which ones are missing cover art — so you fix exactly what’s broken instead of guessing.

What the File Browser Does

Scans folders for music files and groups them into albums.

Reads the artist and album from each file’s tags — or, if your tags are a mess, from the folder and file names instead.

Checks whether cover art is already present for each album and highlights the result: red rows mean artwork is missing, green rows mean it’s already there.

You can also drag and drop a folder straight onto the File Browser window instead of browsing for it.

Step-by-Step: Find and Fix Missing Covers

1Open the File Browser

In Album Art Downloader, go to File → New → File Browser. A browser window opens with an empty file list.

2Point it at your music folder

Enter the path to the top-level folder of your music collection (for example, your “Music” folder) and click Search. The File Browser walks through the folder and lists every album it can identify.

3Read the red and green highlights

Rows highlighted red are albums with no cover art found. Rows highlighted green already have artwork and can be skipped. This is the whole point of the File Browser: you instantly see what needs fixing.

4Select the albums missing art

Select one album — or hold Ctrl to pick several, or Shift to select a range. Right-clicking a row also gives you handy options like Preview, Rename, Delete, or Open in Explorer.

5Get artwork for the selection

Click Get Artwork for Selection. A search window opens for each selected album and queries the enabled script sources in parallel. If you’re fixing a lot of albums at once, searches are queued automatically — you can watch and manage them in the Queue Manager, or double-click a queued search to run it immediately.

6Pick a cover and save it

Preview the thumbnails, click the one you want, then choose the cover type from the preset dropdown next to the save button — Front, Back, Inside, CD, and so on — and click Save. The image is saved into the album’s folder, by default as folder.jpg.

How It Identifies Your Albums

By default the File Browser reads the artist and album from your files’ metadata tags. If your tags are incomplete or inconsistent, you can switch it to determine the artist and album from a path pattern — for example, interpreting D:\Music\Pink Floyd\The Dark Side of the Moon\ as artist “Pink Floyd” and album “The Dark Side of the Moon”. Use whichever matches how your collection is actually organized.

Where the Covers Get Saved

When you launch a search from the File Browser, the save location is filled in for you and locked to the album’s folder, so covers always land next to the music they belong to. The default file name is folder.jpg — the name most players (including Windows Media Player, foobar2000, and car stereos) look for automatically. You can customize the save pattern in the settings, including placeholders and the Front/Back/Inside/CD presets, if you prefer a different naming scheme.

Tip for large libraries: start with one artist folder to get a feel for the workflow before pointing the File Browser at a multi-terabyte collection. Queued searches run in the background, so you can keep working while it churns through hundreds of albums.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details class="cb-faq">

What is the File Browser in Album Art Downloader?

It’s a built-in tool that scans a folder of music files, identifies each album from tags or file names, and shows you which albums already have cover art and which are missing it — highlighted green and red respectively. From there you can fetch artwork for just the albums that need it.

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

How does it know the artist and album for each file?

It reads the metadata tags embedded in your music files. If your tags are unreliable, you can instead have it parse the artist and album from the folder and file name pattern, which you can configure to match your collection’s layout.

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

What do the red and green row highlights mean?

Red means no cover art was found for that album — it needs fixing. Green means artwork is already present, so you can skip it. The highlighting updates as you add covers.

</details>
<details class="cb-faq">

Where does it save the downloaded cover?

By default it saves as folder.jpg inside the album’s own folder, which is the file name most music players recognize automatically. You can change the save pattern and use the Front/Back/Inside/CD presets in the settings.
