Album Cover Art Size Guide: What Resolution Do You Actually Need?

Bigger isn’t always better. A 3000px cover embedded in every track bloats your library; a 300px one looks blurry on a modern phone. Here’s what each device and use case actually needs — so you download once, at the right size.

Resolution Cheat Sheet by Device and Service

Where the cover shows What resolution you need Notes
Spotify ~640px Spotify serves around 640px artwork for its apps — bigger files get downscaled anyway
Apple Music / iTunes Store Up to 3000px Apple asks labels for high-resolution masters (typically 3000px); what you can actually download depends on the source
YouTube Music ~512–1000px Varies by release; roughly in this range for most albums
Phone (local playback) 1000–1500px Sharp on modern phone screens without wasting space
Car stereo / older devices 600px or less Many head units and old players choke on — or simply ignore — large embedded images; 600px is the safe choice
Desktop player 1000–1500px Matches typical “now playing” artwork panels
Printing a poster Depends on print size At 300 dpi, 3000px ≈ 10 inches — see our album cover wall art guide for the full math

The Practical Recommendation

  • Archive / master copy: keep 1500–3000px. Storage is cheap; you can always downscale later, but you can never upscale.
  • Embedded in music files: 1000–1400px square JPG. Sharp everywhere modern, and it keeps each file only ~100–500 KB heavier.
  • Car stereo / USB stick: 600px. Maximum compatibility with picky head units.
One download, three sizes: grab the highest resolution you can find once (our Album Art Downloader or the online tool), keep it as your master, then resize copies for embedding and for the car.

Three Things People Get Wrong

1. Upscaling doesn’t add detail

Blowing a 500px image up to 3000px in an editor just makes a bigger blurry image. Resolution has to come from the source — that’s why finding a genuinely high-res cover matters more than any “enhance” trick.

2. Non-square covers get cropped

Most players expect square artwork and will center-crop anything else — often cutting off text at the edges. Stick to square images for anything you embed.

3. Bigger files aren’t always better for embedding

A 3000px JPG embedded in every track of a 500-album library adds gigabytes. Match the size to the job: archive big, embed medium, car small.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best size for album art in MP3 files?
1000–1400px square JPG. It’s sharp on phones and desktops while keeping the per-file size increase modest (roughly 100–500 KB). If you play music in an older car stereo, consider 600px for maximum compatibility.
Is 3000px overkill for digital music?
For embedding, yes — no screen in a music player shows 3000px. But it’s worth keeping a 3000px master copy in your archive (or for printing posters), since you can always downscale and never upscale.
Does a bigger cover image sound better?
No — artwork has zero effect on audio quality. It only affects how the album looks in players, and how much disk space the files use.
Where can I download high-resolution covers?
Album Art Downloader batch-searches 20+ community script sources for your whole library, and our free online tool pulls high-resolution artwork for single albums from the public iTunes Search API.
