Foobar2000 Album Art Downloader Integration Guide (2026)

For audiophiles and lossless FLAC collectors, Foobar2000 is the undisputed champion of bit-perfect audio playback. However, managing missing or low-resolution artwork manually can slow down your listening experience. By pairing Foobar2000 with Album Art Downloader (XUI), you can right-click any track in your playlist and instantly summon crystal-clear 1000px+ covers from over 30 databases in less than 2 seconds.

Prerequisites Checklist

1. Foobar2000 Player

Compatible with Foobar2000 v2.0+ (64-bit / 32-bit) and v1.6.x standard or portable installations.

2. Album Art Downloader

Ensure you have AAD v1.05 installed with this site’s community script pack (unofficial).

3. foo_run Component

The standard “Run Services” plugin enables Foobar2000 to launch external CLI applications.

1

Install the Run Services (foo_run) Component

The foo_run component allows Foobar2000 to pass title formatting tags (such as %artist% and %album%) directly into Album Art Downloader’s command line engine:

  1. Download foo_run.fb2k-component from the official Foobar2000 components repository.
  2. In Foobar2000, navigate to File > Preferences > Components (or press Ctrl + P).
  3. Click Install…, select the downloaded component file, and click Apply.
  4. Foobar2000 will prompt you to restart. Click OK.
2

Configure the Run Services Command

Now, let’s configure the exact command line string so Foobar2000 automatically tells AAD which album to search for and where to save the resulting folder.jpg:

  1. Go to File > Preferences > Tools > Run services.
  2. Click the Add button to create a new service.
  3. In the Label field, enter: Search Album Art (AAD)
  4. In the Path field, paste the verified command string below:
"C:Program FilesAlbumArtDownloaderAlbumArt.exe" /ar "%artist%" /al "%album%" /p "$replace(%path%,%filename_ext%,)folder.jpg" /autoclose

*If you installed Album Art Downloader in C:Program Files (x86)... or a custom portable folder, adjust the executable path accordingly.

Parameter Breakdown:

Switch Explanation
/ar "%artist%" Passes the active track’s Artist metadata tag to AAD.
/al "%album%" Passes the active track’s Album Title to AAD.
/p "..." Automatically resolves the track’s folder and saves the image as folder.jpg.
/autoclose Automatically exits AAD as soon as you click the save icon, returning you to Foobar2000.

Advanced Setup: Soundtracks & Compilations

For soundtracks and compilation albums featuring multiple artists, using %artist% can sometimes cause AAD to search for individual featured performers instead of the primary album artist. Use this enhanced command to prioritize %album artist% with fallback to %artist%:

"C:Program FilesAlbumArtDownloaderAlbumArt.exe" /ar "$if2(%album artist%,%artist%)" /al "%album%" /p "$replace(%path%,%filename_ext%,)folder.jpg" /autoclose

How to Trigger the Integration in Foobar2000

  1. Play or select any track or album in your Foobar2000 playlist.
  2. Right-click the track and navigate to Run service > Search Album Art (AAD).
  3. Album Art Downloader launches instantly, pre-populated with your album title and artist, querying 20+ community script sources in parallel.
  4. Hover over the highest resolution cover (e.g. 1500px or 3000px) and click the floppy disk save icon.
  5. The image is written as folder.jpg, AAD automatically closes, and Foobar2000 instantly updates its artwork display panel!

⚡ Pro Tip: Bind to a Global Keyboard Shortcut

You can make this even faster by binding a hotkey: Go to Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts > Add New. Search for Search Album Art (AAD) and assign a quick shortcut like Ctrl + Alt + A. Now, whenever you encounter a song with missing artwork, tap the hotkey to fetch a pristine cover in 2 seconds flat!

Foobar2000 Artwork Display Troubleshooting

If you downloaded a cover but Foobar2000 doesn’t display it right away:

  • Flush Foobar2000 Image Cache: Select the track(s), right-click, choose Tagging > Reload info from file(s) (or hit F5).
  • Verify Artwork Search Masks: In Foobar2000, go to Preferences > Advanced > Display > Album art > Front cover search masks. Ensure cover.jpg and folder.jpg are listed at the beginning of the mask string.

Foobar2000 Integration FAQ

Do I need the foo_run component for this to work?
Yes. This guide uses foo_run, a third-party foobar2000 component that adds configurable “Run services” to the context menu. Install the .fb2k-component file via Preferences > Components > Install, then add the Album Art Downloader command under Preferences > Tools > Run services.
What do %artist% and %album% mean in the command?
They are foobar2000 title-formatting placeholders. When you run the service on a track, foobar2000 replaces them with that track’s actual artist and album tags before launching Album Art Downloader — so the search is always for the song you clicked.
The search opens but finds nothing. What’s wrong?
First check the track’s tags are filled in — empty artist/album tags mean an empty search. If tags are fine, the script for that source may have broken (websites redesign often); update your scripts or tick additional sources and try again.
Does this work with 64-bit foobar2000?
foo_run is an older 32-bit component and may not load in foobar2000 v2.x 64-bit. If it doesn’t appear after installing, check the component’s compatibility notes — or use Album Art Downloader’s built-in File Browser on your music folder instead, which needs no foobar2000 integration at all.
